A new epidemic? Monkeypox on the rise

Monkeypox is a rare viral disease similar to smallpox. It was first discovered in monkeys in 1958 and later in humans in 1970. Monkeypox virus is found in Africa and Asia and can be transmitted from animals to humans. The disease is usually mild, but can be fatal in some cases. There have been several outbreaks of monkeypox in Africa, but among the most recent was an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in September 2018.

The outbreak in the Republic began when a child became infected with the virus after coming into contact with an infected animal. The minor then transmitted the virus to family members and others in his village. As of October 2018, 109 cases of monkeypox and 21 deaths had been confirmed. This is the largest outbreak of monkeypox on record up to that time. Subsequently, the virus has traveled through various carriers, which even without knowing the severity of the disease have continued their normal lives, and are only detected when they begin to show symptoms.
