Don’t tolerate harassment from a debt collector

A debt collector is a person who tracks and convinces someone who’s in debt to return the money. Unfortunately, it often happens that collectors exceed their duties and end up troubling borrowers. If you suspect that it’s happening to you, let’s define harassment by a debt collector.

How can you figure out that a debt collector harasses you?

According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, it’s not allowed to harass, abuse, or threaten debtors in any way. You know you’re being harassed when a collector:

  • calls you many times throughout the day, especially early in the morning or late in the evening;

  • uses bad language, curses, and insults when talking to you;

  • threatens to use physical violence, damage your property, or destroy your reputation;

  • spreads information about your financial obligations and tries to ruin your image.

What can be done in case of harassment from a debt collector?

First of all, you can file a complaint under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Make sure to save the history of your conversations with the collector in order to prove their obscene behaviour. Alternatively, you can reach out to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If a debt collector makes you miserable, you shouldn’t fight them off on your own. Contact us for professional help.
